Being cited is not the same as being named

There are two separate things an AI answer can do with a business. It can name it in the text a reader sees, and it can read it as one of the sources it builds the answer from. Almost every visibility tool measures the first and calls it visibility.

On one of our properties, in two scans on 8 and 10 August 2026 (87 and 147 graded answers), those two numbers pointed in opposite directions. The engines named the brand in about 1% of the answers, while quoting that same site as a source behind roughly three answers in ten; the second scan found nine of its pages being read.

A mention-only tracker would have reported that business as invisible and recommended starting from scratch. The truth was that it was among the most-read sources in its category and had an attribution problem, which is a completely different job: the pages were already trusted, the answers just were not crediting them.

The practical test: if your visibility report shows a rate near zero, ask whether anyone checked the source lists. Being read and uncredited is a far shorter distance from being recommended than being genuinely absent.
