Turned down for a loan?
Applying again straight away usually makes it worse. Each application is recorded, and a run of them reads as trouble to the next lender.
Ask why
understanding the reason lets you fix it before the next application, rather than collecting rejections
What this is
A rejection is information, and most people treat it as a verdict. The instinct is to apply somewhere else immediately, which is the one thing that reliably makes the next answer worse: every application is recorded on your credit report, and a cluster of them in a short window looks like someone in difficulty. The useful sequence is slower and shorter: find out the reason, check your credit report for errors, fix what is fixable, and only then apply again.
Does it apply to you?
- Anyone declined for a loan, a card or a phone contract
- Anyone about to apply somewhere else straight away
- Anyone who needs the money urgently, where the answer is a different product entirely
How to do it
- Ask the lender why. They can tell you, and the reason is usually specific rather than mysterious.
- Get your credit report, free, and check it for errors. A mistake on it is a common and fixable cause.
- Fix what you can before applying again: reduce other credit limits, clear small defaults, show a few months of steady saving.
- If you need money urgently, do not shop applications around. Look at a No Interest Loan or a Centrelink advance instead.
Where people lose the money
Applying to three more lenders the same week.
Each one leaves an enquiry, and the cluster is itself a reason to decline. Fix the cause first.
Assuming your credit report is correct.
It is free to check and errors are common. A paid debt still showing as unpaid is the usual one.
Turning to a payday lender because you were declined.
A No Interest Loan has no interest and no credit check, and a Centrelink advance costs nothing if you receive a payment.
Questions
Does being rejected show on my credit report?
The application shows as an enquiry. The outcome is not usually recorded, but a pattern of enquiries in a short period is visible and is read as a signal.
How long should I wait before applying again?
Long enough to change something. There is no fixed period, but applying again without fixing the reason produces the same answer plus another enquiry.
What if I need the money now?
A No Interest Loan lends up to $2,000 for essentials with no interest, no fees and no credit check. If you receive a Centrelink payment, an advance costs nothing at all.
